Meet our people

Want to know what our people think about Holcim? Here are some thoughts from those already working for us:

Bob Beattie National Concrete Improvement Manager, Beenleigh QLD

I have been employed in the concrete industry since 1976 and joined Holcim in July 1990. During my time at Holcim I've held a number of management roles within the concrete business: plant management, transport, cell management, operations and operational improvement. Through the years I have witnessed change in all areas of operation. However, one constant within the business is that as a manager and part of a dynamic team, I have been given the opportunity to learn and grow as a person and manager, develop different skills and been exposed to and part of decision-making that has changed the direction and performance of the business. Above all, Holcim has allowed me to manage as if I owned the business. I still get excited when I see improved results I have influenced.

Debra Jackson Human Resources Manager, Chatswood NSW

I started working for the company in 1985 as a junior in the mail room. Internal opportunities led me to positions in the accounts department and then into my career in human resources (H.R.). My first HR position was as a Site Personnel Officer. The company supported my studies and provided me with on-the-job support and mentoring to help ensure my success. In 1992, I transferred to a Training Officer role to expand my skills. In 1995 I resigned to start a family and had the opportunity to return in a part-time capacity in 1997. Since returning, I have held a variety of HR roles working in all levels of the business. During this time I have maintained my part-time status, and have the opportunity to work from home as needed. This helps me balance my work and home life while still meeting the needs of the business. I have made many life-long friendships while working for Holcim and really enjoy the opportunities and challenges I have been faced with. Thanks to Holcim, I have a career that fits my personal needs and also meets the needs of the company.

Andrew Wright Production Manager, Toowoomba QLD

I joined Holcim in 2004 as part of the Humes Graduate Program. I've been involved in a multi-million dollar high-rise development on the Gold Coast as well as many other aspects of the business. Since that time I've managed a factory comprised of 20 employees that produces 15,000 tonnes of concrete products a year. One of the aspects of the graduate program that I like and that sums up the attitude of Holcim is the company's commitment to training and employee development. They come through with their promises rather than just pay lip service. Also, it's great to be paired up with a mentor - a senior member of the company - who is willing to go out of their way to share their experience. I highly recommend Holcim as an employer for graduates who want to build their careers or to anyone who wants to see their hard work rewarded.

Peter Hewson Trainee Quarry Manager, Canberra ACT

I commenced my employment with Holcim in July 2003, initially operating mobile equipment including sales loaders, 35 tonne articulated dumps trucks and 50 tonne dump trucks and graders. My goal was to learn as much as I could about the quarrying business. Holcim management encouraged me to learn new skills and to be involved in all aspects of operations. Afterwards, I moved into a distribution and allocations position for approximately 10 months where I received a great deal of recognition from management. My next role helped me learn about and operate Holcim's crushing and processing plant. Later, I became the site's leading hand. Recently, I was offered a position as Trainee Quarry Manager and accepted it with great enthusiasm. I enjoy my new role and all the challenges that come with it. I like learning new skills along with the training Holcim offers employees. I hope to work for Holcim for many years.

John Mak Production Manager, Artarmon NSW

I started my career with Holcim in 1994 as a Yardman at the Ingleburn Concrete Plant located in Western Sydney. After six months, I was assigned to the allocation and distribution team for Sydney Quarries. Since I had no allocation experience, Holcim took the time and effort to train me, which gave me confidence. In 1998, Holcim opened a central dispatch call centre for Sydney concrete and I joined that team, a position I held for four years. To gain more hands-on experience in the concrete plant I moved into the Production Supervisor position. In 2004, I was appointed Production Manager for Brookvale/Hornsby concrete plants, which gave me an introduction to plant management. For the past three years, I have been the Production Manager for the Artarmon concrete plant - the biggest challenge in my time with Holcim. We have finished supplying 200,000 cubic metres of concrete to the Lane Cove Tunnel project. I have worked at Holcim for more than 13 years and have really enjoyed my time here. I am thankful for the opportunities Holcim gives me and look forward to continuing my career with Holcim.
