Holcim Awards competition

The Holcim Awards is an international competition of the Holcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction. The competition celebrates innovative, future-oriented and tangible sustainable construction projects and visions from around the globe. The competition has been run by the Swiss-based Holcim Foundation since 2004, offers USD 2 million in prize money per three-year cycle, and is supported by Holcim Ltd and its Group companies in more than 70 countries.

Global Holcim Awards 2012

A secondary school project in Gando, Burkina Faso, a community center project in São Paulo, Brazil, and an urban renewal plan in Berlin, Germany are the winners of the Global Holcim Awards for 2012. These leading sustainable construction projects were selected from 15 finalist submissions from more than 6,000 entries in 146 countries by a jury of independent experts led by architect Enrique Norten and including Maria Atkinson, Group Head of Sustainability, Lend Lease and Managing Director, Sustainability Solutions, Australia.

All 53 prize-winning projects at the regional level also competed for further prizes based on their contributions to sustainable construction through innovative building materials and construction technologies. The Global Holcim Innovation prizes conferred by a jury of materials and industry experts led by architect Harry Gugger went to projects in Switzerland, Germany and the United Kingdom.

Global Holcim Awards 2012

An urban plan which transforms an under-utilized arm of the River Spree in Berlin into a natural 745m-long “swimming pool” won the USD 100,000 Holcim Awards Gold 2011 Europe – “Urban renewal and swimming-pool precinct, Berlin, Germany”.

Members of the Global Holcim Awards jury included (l-r): Hans-Rudolf Schalcher, Professor em. for Planning and Management in Construction at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (Switzerland); Maria Atkinson, Group Head of Sustainability, Lend Lease (Australia); and Werner Sobek, Director of the Institute for Lightweight Structures and Conceptual Design (ILEK) at the University of Stuttgart, (Germany).

Regional Holcim Awards 2011

In the regional phase of the 3rd International Holcim Awards competition, a total of 53 leading-edge projects from 29 countries shared USD 1.5 million in prize money in 2011. Following an evaluation process by independent juries in five regions of the world, the winning projects and their design teams were celebrated by receiving Awards, Acknowledgement and “Next Generation” prizes at ceremonies in Milan, Washington, Buenos Aires, Casablanca, and Singapore.

Support by world-renowned technical universities

The Holcim Awards competitions are conducted in partnership with some of the world’s leading technical universities. The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zurich) leads the Technical Competence Center of the Holcim Foundation. Other partner universities which host the independent competition juries are: the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, USA; the Universidad Iberoamericana (UIA) in Mexico City, Mexico; l’École Supérieure d’Architecture de Casablanca (EAC) in Morocco, and Institute of Technology (IIT Bombay) in Mumbai, India. Tongji University (TJU) in Shanghai, China, Universidade de São Paulo (USP), Brazil and the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in Johannesburg, South Africa are associated universities of the Holcim Foundation.
