About Lynwood Quarry

Site layout and location

Lynwood Quarry is a hard rock quarry currently being constructed by Holcim (Australia) Pty Ltd to the west of Marulan in the Southern Tablelands of New South Wales. The quarry is located in the Goulburn Mulwaree Local Government Area, approximately 160km south west of Sydney and 27km northeast of Goulburn.

On December 21st 2005, the NSW Minister for Planning granted Cemex (now Holcim Australia) consent for the proposed 5 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) Lynwood Quarry. Since the original development approval, three minor modifications have been made to the Development Consent, including reconfiguring of the rail load out and site facilities to optimise site infrastructure and layout.

Products

A range of products are planned to be produced from the quarry. Typical quarry products include:

  • spalls (up to 300mm diameter)
  • ballast (typically used for railway ballast)
  • aggregate products ranging in size from 4.5mm to 20mm
  • manufactured sand
  • road base

A pre-coat plant is also planned for the site in the future. This coats aggregate products with a bitumen emulsion for use in some types of road works. Quarry products have a range of applications in the construction and landscaping industries including:

  • use of aggregates in concrete, bituminous surfacing, asphalt, landscape works, drainage works, road construction and gravel surfacing
  • railway ballast
  • rock for gabion baskets and wire mattresses used in stabilisation (e.g. road batters) and drainage works
  • rock for coastal protection works
  • manufactured sand for use in concrete, as fill and in landscaping
  • road base for use in road construction, as fill and in landscaping
  • oversize rock for landscaping, decorative and stabilisation works

It is expected that the majority of product from Lynwood Quarry will be used for construction projects, primarily in concrete and in roadway construction. For more information about quarry products from Holcim Australia, please see:

Project timing

The start of the quarry operations at Lynwood is linked to the end of operations at the Penrith Lakes Scheme. The Penrith Lakes Scheme is a joint venture project between Holcim (Australia) Pty Limited, Boral Pty Ltd and Hanson Australia Pty Limited and is located west of Sydney. The timing of the end of operations at Penrith Lakes is under regular review. We currently anticipate that production from Lynwood Quarry will commence in the first quarter of 2015.
