Coordinating Progress and Purpose
Ben Morton-O’Brien on Teamwork at Holcim
As Area Operations Manager for Holcim on the Gold Coast, Ben Morton-O’Brien plays a vital role in making sure complex projects stay on track. Responsible for three major developments and a key customer, his work is focused on aligning people, processes, and priorities to deliver strong outcomes across the region.
“Success in my role is the coordination of major projects and customers alike — making sure everyone gets the best possible outcome and seeing those projects through to the end,” says Ben.
What drives him is the variety — and the people. Each day brings new challenges, but it’s the team culture that keeps things running smoothly. “Every day is the same but different,” he says. “I enjoy the variety, and I’m backed by a really good group of people.”

Ben’s career at Holcim has grown alongside his responsibilities. Now overseeing operations across the entire Gold Coast, he’s developed both his technical expertise and leadership approach. “This role has allowed me to step outside of what I was used to and broaden my experience,” he says.
Leadership, for Ben, is grounded in support and collaboration. He oversees batching teams across multiple plants and works to ensure everyone feels included and empowered to grow. “We lead by example through learning and encouragement,” he says. “When people feel part of the process, the outcomes are always better.”
That sense of shared purpose extends to sustainability — an area where Ben sees Holcim making real progress. He’s proud to be contributing to industry innovation through trials of lower-emission concrete and increased use of recycled aggregates.
“It makes me feel positive for the future. I’ve got a young family, so I’m always thinking about what kind of world they’ll grow up in. Sustainability isn’t just a target — it’s a legacy.”
He brings that same sense of care to safety. From running regular toolbox talks to encouraging open conversations, Ben fosters a workplace where people feel confident to speak up. “If you don’t feel safe, stop. Call someone. If that’s me — call me. It’s that simple.”
Teamwork is the foundation of everything he does. In a fast-moving logistics environment, collaboration is key. “Everyone’s here working toward the same goal. Communicating and working together always delivers the best results.”
At the heart of his experience is a deep appreciation for the people around him. “There’s a strong network here — from leadership to the staff on the ground. Everyone’s committed to doing their best, and that’s what makes a difference.”
