Powering Australia’s Energy Transition through HumeLink

Holcim’s on-site concrete solutions are helping deliver one of Australia’s largest transmission upgrades
  • HumeLink is one of NSW largest energy infrastructure projects and will deliver about 365 kilometres of new 500vK transmission line connecting Wagga Wagga, Bannaby and Maragle.

  • Once completed it will help connect more renewable energy generation, including Snowy 2.0, to major demand centres, helping to deliver more reliable, affordable, and renewable power to millions of Australians.

  • The project is being designed and constructed in two sections by ACCIONA and GenusPlus Group Joint Venture (HumeLink East) and UGL and CPB Contractors Joint Venture (HumeLink West).

HumeLink is an incredibly exciting project to be part of. It showcases the capability of our teams to deliver reliable, high-performance concrete solutions in some of the most challenging environments in the country. By bringing mobile batching directly to site, we’re helping keep this nationally significant project moving efficiently and sustainably.

The project will provide 2,200 megawatts of on-demand energy generation and enough storage to power around three million homes for a week, making it a critical part of Australia’s shift to renewable energy.

Delivering a project of this scale is a formidable logistical challenge. With each steel lattice transmission tower standing between 50 and 76 metres high, the need for precise and continuous foundation works is immense. The construction is being led by two joint ventures: UGL-CPB Contractors on HumeLink West, and ACCIONA-Genus on HumeLink East.

Holcim is the ready-mix concrete supplier for both HumeLink East and HumeLink West. Delivering a project of this scale demands a reliable, high-volume concrete supply across vast distances and challenging terrain. Each of the steel lattice towers requires precise and continuous foundation works, making consistency and efficiency critical to maintaining the construction schedule.

To meet this challenge, Holcim has deployed a network of mobile batching plants, bringing concrete production directly to site. These mobile plants provide flexibility to move with the construction front, ensure a fresh and consistent mix regardless of distance, and reduce the need for heavy truck movements on rural roads. This approach improves productivity, enhances safety, and minimises transport emissions.

The result is a concrete supply chain engineered for reliability and adaptability, matched to the project’s ambition to reshape Australia’s energy landscape. Through close collaboration and smart delivery, Holcim is helping power the next generation of renewable infrastructure that enables a cleaner and more resilient energy future. Construction of the project is set to be completed in 2027.

Through projects like HumeLink, Holcim is putting its NextGen Growth 2030 strategy into action – expanding high-value building solutions and leveraging its sustainability leadership to deliver the foundations for a cleaner, more connected Australia.

About Snowy 2.0

Snowy 2.0 is a major pumped-hydro expansion of the original Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Scheme in New South Wales. It will link the existing Tantangara and Talbingo dams through 27km of tunnels and a new underground power station.

The project will provide 2,200 megawatts of on-demand energy generation and enough storage to power around three million homes for a week, making it a critical part of Australia’s shift to renewable energy.

By storing excess wind and solar power when it’s plentiful and releasing it when demand is high, Snowy 2.0 helps stabilise the grid and ensure energy reliability as coal-fired plants retire.
